Are Recessions Actually Good For Us? (Earn & Invest Community Episode) SB1539
If you listen to the news (or see the carnage around you), you know that recessions are a time of hurt. Companies downsize or go bankrupt. People lose their jobs, their homes, and in a stock market decline, their ability to meet goals. But are recessions actually good for us? One recent financial piece says that they are, and our collaborator and friend Doc G at our award-winning sister show, Earn & Invest, dives into it today. He's asked two people from his community plus Joe Saul-Sehy to a panel discussing the possibility that just maybe...behind all of the tears and horror, a recession might be healthy.

How To Become a Financial Mutant (with Brian Preston) SB1523
On what planet does Paula live on? Is she really under the impression that every person has access to a sabbatical, able to “stack” weeks or even has weeks to stack? She’s always seemed out of touch, isn’t her husband supporting her? She needs to open her eyes and see the real world, not just the world she imagines in her mind. Then she needs to apologize for her rudeness..
Where’s he at?
Disabled vet 0 property taxes 😎
Where I live has such high school and property taxes that in the 11 years I've lived here I've paid nearly as much in taxes as the purchase price of the house. I got a good deal on the home pre-covid but that's still insane. The worst part is the schools are shit and the services those taxes go to are terrible.
So done with Paula. She annoyed me before but this with her being incredibly rude and insisting she is the expert on traveling with kids. Paula has no kids and Len does. Wish Len stayed and Paula left the podcast.
Fantastic insights on retirement prep, especially about cushioning crashes. You guys always keep it informative and fun! Sent you a DM on Instagram. Keep up the great work, Joe and OG!
I love your videos! Your content is amazing and deserves more attention. but I've noticed the channel isn't growing as much as it deserves.
The banks have been charging me 1.78%. I don’t like it far too much.
I am in my early 60s and retired at 53. Lots of people gave me pushback because they had difficulty grasping the concept of not working if you don’t have to. I looked at my life as stages. I earned everything I have now through a lot of hard work, but I owe it to myself to “stop and smell the roses” in my final stage of life. In my case I left the country after I retired and live in Latin America. It allowed me to get away from all the negative things happening in America while appreciating my new environment. I have yet to meet anyone who regrets retirement.
It's unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than a million dollars by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.
I think this is something I should do, but I've been stalling for a long time now. I don't really know which firm to work with; I feel they are all the same but it seems you’ve got it all worked out with the firm you work with so i surely wouldn’t mind a recommendation.
I definitely share your sentiment about these firms. Finding financial advisors like Layan Talia Chokr who can assist you shape your portfolio would be a very creative option. There will be difficult times ahead, and prudent personal money management will be essential to navigating them.
Nice way to retire. For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My wife and I both spent same number of years in the civil service, she invested through a wealth manager and myself through the 401k. We both still earning after our retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.
Thank you for this Pointer. It was easy to find your handler, She seems very proficient and flexible. I booked a call session with her.
I will have my CPP my old age. I just lost my husband so I have his CPP and when I’m 60, I will also have the survivors allowance and then when I turn 65 it changes over to GIS guaranteed income supplement and plus I have my savings.
Also, I’m from Canada so is this going to be OK for me?
Yeah, I’m very interested in purchasing it, but is there online support to help me properly fill it in I don’t really know much about what I’m doing here
Try the trial version, see how it works for you. They have assistance and you can book an advisor session for a one-time fee to help you construct/assess your plan. One thing I wish it included is better guidance on inflation assumptions which this video addresses.
I am interested in the calculator! How much is it to purchase it?
Wow your content is great!! Can we have a little discussion?
Camera seems to be out of focus, or low res.
Rivian is up like 50% after hours
Great Info. Thanks, Hannah!
The whole 600$ reporting for paypal means they were targeting hobbies too.
Who's that baby face?! oh... it's clean shaven Joe lol! Some budget gotchas for me. You mentioned gifts, I had four graduation parties, that was $200 that I didn't account for. We had a few storms that came through and I've had a couple trees and limbs some down that needed removed. Pet/Vet expenses. I had an unfortunate passing and Vet + Cremation expenses were over $500. While we typically have an emergency fund for those unexpected expenses, but maybe legal expenses? We had a family member with a DWI. Those legal costs and all expenses that go along with that!
Hard disagree about expense ratios. They're a great starting place for filtering out funds that you absolutely don't want to put your money in. That doesn't mean you end your search there, but there's really no other better way to get started. Between this and annuities, Joe seems to have this contrarian streak when it comes to popular advice in the FI community. But this advice just works most of the time!
What a great show. Too funny!
Thank you!

If you don't ask, the answer is always "no".
This is like, the lamest most mediocre thing ever. I love it.
Hey Doug, The Joshua Tree came out in 1987, not 1984 🙂
Passion also has less to do with a specific job description and more to do with a career field that capitalizes on your character and talent traits. I found a really great spot in the natural gas industry, which I never anticipated. Had I followed my hobby, I would have tried to be a professional competition shooter, but that doesn't pay well. The gas industry capitalizes on my desire to work with my hands, be self motivated, work in a technical field and manage process systems and I have yet to regret it one bit. I actually love going to work everyday. That's what following your passion is all about. And they pay me quite well.
Well THAT didn't age very well now did it! I wonder how the CSC crowd (Covid Scardey Cats) deal with their over-reaction now?
So, in other words, it's going to be more beneficial for the banks, right?
I will be dropping off my 2 little kids for summer travel with Paula shortly. Enjoy!
Jokes about little people and diabetes are tasteless. You guys are immature
Mom would tell me 'We will talk about it' rather than just saying no. lol
love OG's comment what else can I do. I agree Build on what life deals you. Take what life deals you and build on it.
I enjoyed Len and sad to see him go. I agree with his view points on the previous podcast. I feel like the show has grown a little stale.
Hey, Andrew! We all are sad to see Len go. I also am sorry to hear that you think the show has "grown stale." As the creator, I've been super happy w/ all of the innovations and am having more fun making it than ever before. First, I've been excited that our guest lineup continually gets stronger and brings great stuff to mentor our community (I especially loved Jenn Drummond, Jon Acuff, and James Rhea this year...two of the three of them you won't find on other financial shows as well...), I've loved making the comedian "ride along" shows (another coming in a couple of weeks, we had a blast making Doug and the Three Ghosts, and I've of course also liked that the necessary evil (the advertisements) are shorter--you'll see that in the next week--and all in the first half of the show so the back half is ad free. Also, recording our Friday shows live here on RUclips each week has been fun lately. Hopefully we'll keep innovating enough that we can find something that'll stoke your interest! - joe.
When are we going to see Doug do his "OG" intro on the RUclips Friday video podcast? I don't ask for much, in fact, I don't ask for anything but that that would be nice.
Ha! On Friday OG is a participant, not a host...so that hasn't been part of the plan. We should do it just for fun one day soon, though. :-)
Len Penzo was my favorite part of the show. I really look forward to him every week. It's really tragic that you let Little Miss no talent drive him off. Maybe you should rethink who got the boot.
Definitely an odd difference of opinions, the affordability/prioritization of international vacations, to kick someone off the show for.
Kicked off the show? Len decided to retire! At least keep it factual....
@@StackingBenjamins Odd that he retired after being excoriated publicly. Why not let him make a public statement on the show. BTW, I personally know he did not want to leave the show. You have a fantastic show and I have not missed a podcast in many years but that episode and what coincidentally happened afterwards really leaves a taint. Worst part is that she will be back without an apology, a look back, or a second thought about what she did to a really great guy.
Paula in the comments of her latest Instagram post claims Len Penzo used a slur. No other details. I think this whole situation was handled poorly. We should never have seen any of the exchange, because what they showed looked really bad for Paula. Look at all the responses. Overwhelmingly negative toward Paula/people saying they won't listen to her anymore. I too believed she was totally out of line for her argument and the way she argued it, but if there is more out there that changes how it looks, we will apparently never see it. That's honestly unfair to Paula, who now takes the blame for pushing Len out of the podcast. Is that an accurate assessment? I guess we'll never know, but people will draw their conclusions from what they saw.
What's fair to Paula is the reason we didn't air the rest. We ran it by her first.
